Last night was the first event of the New York City Organization of Student Editors, and it was an amazing debut. Members of the coalition engaged in candid discussions in breakout rooms about the challenges of running a newsroom virtually, reflected on how the pandemic has dominated their newsrooms and many other student newsrooms around the city, and came out of last night with better knowledge of what other student editors have been challenged by and how they have overcome those obstacles.
Secondly, we heard from Mohamed Hassan, the digital associate editor for the New York Post on his experience climbing up the ladder in journalism out of college, how it’s been like overseeing a team of reporters who break significant and meaningful metro-area stories often and discussed his creative process on generating a few catchy headlines that the Post is known for.
Aside from very engaging discussions, we did a very fun $15 Starbucks gift card “wheel spin” raffle and many people found many different things in common with each other which I hope will lead to friendships in the future.
We are all looking forward to Event #2 on March 24th with a very esteemed guest speaker.
